About this work

At the Pond shows a bull moose standing in a shallow pond, his antlers catching the light, with a stand of spruce behind him and a stream running out of the foreground over a tangle of fallen branches. It is signed lower right, dated 1916 in the gallery's records, and measures 12 by 16 inches, oil on board.

The moose was one of Rungius's favorite subjects from his first visit to North America in 1894, when he came to hunt moose in Maine. The painting dates from the decade between his first trip to the Canadian Rockies in 1910 and the building of his Banff studio in 1921, and its quick, broken brushwork is typical of his smaller pictures on board.

What this record tells an owner

This sale is not a price guide, and each Rungius is judged on its own subject, size, condition and history. His large canvases of bighorn sheep, mountain goats and grizzlies in the Canadian Rockies, his Wyoming and Yukon pictures and his illustrations are also important parts of his output, and none of them appears here.
