Sell your Carl Rungius painting
This page explains how Steven Stern Fine Arts approaches a Carl Rungius, from the first photographs you send to a finished sale or consignment.
What to send us
Clear photographs settle most first questions about a Rungius. Please send:
- the complete front, taken straight on without glare;
- the full reverse, showing any title, place name such as Banff, the Yukon or Wyoming, date, stamp or label;
- a close view of the signature;
- the size of the picture itself (not the frame), and whether it is oil on canvas or board, or a drawing, etching or watercolor;
- any history you know: how it came into the family, receipts, exhibition labels, prior appraisals.
Please don't clean, reframe or remove labels from the painting before we have seen it.
How we evaluate a Rungius
Every evaluation is free and confidential. The gallery weighs authorship, period, subject, medium, condition, provenance, exhibition history, literature and the work's place in his career. With Rungius, subject and scale are central: a large finished canvas of big game in a mountain setting, a small oil sketch made in the field, an early illustration and a print each appeal to somewhat different buyers.
Your options
- Direct purchase by the gallery.
- Consignment, with the gallery offering the painting to its collectors for you.
- Private sale and advice for significant single works, estates and mixed collections.
Seeing the painting
The gallery is in Los Angeles and works with Rungius owners nationwide, from New York, where Rungius kept his studio for most of his life, to Wyoming, Montana and California, travelling to see important pictures.
